What should you look for in an EMDR therapist?

When Looking For An EMDR Therapist, Here Are The Key Qualifications And Qualities To Consider:

Essential Training and Credentials:

- Completion of EMDR International Association (EMDRIA) approved basic training, which includes at least 40 hours of instruction plus 10 hours of consultation

- Licensed mental health professional (psychologist, social worker, counselor, or psychiatrist) in your state

- EMDRIA certification is ideal but not always required - this involves additional training, consultation, and adherence to practice standards

Experience and Specialization:

- Specific experience treating your particular concern (trauma, PTSD, anxiety, phobias, etc.)

- Ask how long they’ve been practicing EMDR and approximately how many clients they’ve treated with it

- Consider whether they specialize in your demographic (adults, children, veterans, etc.)

Treatment Approach:

- Uses evidence based EMDR protocols

- Integrates EMDR appropriately with other therapeutic approaches when needed - Takes time for proper preparation phases before beginning reprocessing

Personal Fit:

- You feel comfortable and safe with them during initial sessions

- They explain the process clearly and answer your questions thoroughly

- They respect your pace and don’t rush into trauma processing

- Cultural competence, especially related to traumatic experiences as well as supports

Practical Considerations:

- Location, scheduling availability, and session format (in-person vs. telehealth)

- Insurance acceptance, use of super bills or fee structure

- Willingness to coordinate with other healthcare providers if needed
